Ooh shiny! 2 new @Sonos PLAY:3 loan units arrived. Thanks @KimberleyL Niv, Brendan and @SonosAustralia team
Last week I receive an email from Niv and the team at Playback Systems in Melbourne: did I want to try the new PLAY:3 units as well? Of course! They arrived in the Saasu office today (where one of the S5 units is currently delivering happiness: there's something very geek cool about a cloud accounting company listening to cloud-delivered music. At least I reckon there is :-)
Anyway I'll be sharing my thoughts on these new PLAY:3 units soon.
For those curious about the technical specifications on these latest powered speakers from Sono the recent press release clarifies:
- 3 integrated speakers and 3 dedicated digital amplifiers
- Internal sensor detects if the speaker is positioned vertically or horizontally and modifies the speaker’s output to ensure clean, balanced, room-filing sound in any position.
- Add two PLAY:3s to the same room and enjoy even bigger sound with each playing a dedicated Left or Right channel.
Montgomery St Cafe opening @Bridget_CooKs @iconic88 #mostreet
I couldn't wait for my friends Bridget and Mahei to open their new venture "The Montgomery St Cafe" in Montgomery St Kogarah. It was too exciting. I made sure I didn't miss the opening day, so got there at 645am to be warmly greeted by front of house "mercenary of kindness" Bobby. It's a beautiful, homely space, and the Campos coffee is fantastic. As is the food - it exceeded all expectations. I tried the "Best Mo-Fo scrambled eggs with toasted sourdough, sides of spiced lamb sausage, roasted spiced tomato with fresh ricotta and min, and soy, mirin and ginger braised mushrooms. It was a knockout! Just delicious.
Watch this place folks - they are in excellent hands with the Internet Chef Bridget Davis and team.
The Montgomery St Cafe is also on Facebook. Follow the tweetstream here too: #mostreet
Photos include the amazing new menu selections. Enjoy!
Can't wait to go back.

Amplify Festival Twitter Dinner /w @rwang0 @venessamiemis @ourfounder /cc @maverickwoman #AmplifyFest
I first met Ray Wang at Coffee Mornings last year - one of Sydney's oldest and most enjoyable tweetups (every Friday at Single Origin Roasters Surry Hills) We hit it off straight away talking disruptive technologies over a good coffee - happy days! We kept in touch via Twitter. Ray's back in Sydney this week to speak at Amplify Festival. He tweeted me for a catchup and we got together last night over dinner.
As it turns out, through the power of Twitter and Northside Coffee Mornings, Annalie Killian (organiser of Amplify) has gotten to know me over the years and she suggested I also meet Jim Benson (@ourfounder on Twitter) who I am also going to see speak about teamwork and collaboration this week.
Imagine my excitement: here I was about to dine with serious brains trusts in Ray and Jim. It got better. As I arrived at their hotel Annalie introduced me to Venessa Miemis who also joined us. Venessa is "scouting the edges of technology and innovation, right where the magic happens". Her quote "Community before Commerce" has stuck with me all day today, I even tweeted it twice! Needless to say the conversation on the night was inspiring and I went home buzzing with ideas. I couldn't sleep!
After one of my regular tweetups at Gelatomassi I asked propritetor Ciccio La Rosa for a restaurant recommendation (he knows his stuff folks). Off we went to Cipri Italian in Paddington and we were looked after by owner Anthony and team with some incredible food to match the conversation. Shown below are:
- beef carpaccio with quail eggs, celery, testun di barolo cheese and walnut pesto
- caprese salad with buffalo mozzarelle
- slow braised deboned lamb shoulder with spinach, served with artichokes and pearl barley
- 100 day grain fed (220g) black angus eye fillet (Gippsland, Victoria) chargrilled with truffled pecorino, assorted confit mushrooms and grilled white polenta
- papprdelle with slow braised duck and porcini mushroom ragu
- warm chocolate pudding with cardamon creme anglaise and hazelnut gelato
- chestnut brulee with persimmon puree
- cup of 3 gelato flavours supplied by Gelatomassi
I am so thankful for the community that has grown around Twitter, and loved meeting these wonderful people last night.

Beautiful Chinese Tea Gift Box Fu Yi Tang Tea /cc @MayKingTea
Having a beer with my neighbour he showed me this lovely tea set and tea given by a visitor from China (near where the Terracotta Warriors were found in 1974) I thought of my friend May King who is an expert on Chinese Tea Culture and wonder what she thinks of this tea set and tea leaves. Interesting how the tea, like our coffee, is vacuum packed.

Cabramatta Tweetup - brunch at Pho Minh #VietTUB
An informal tweetup again today, this time a bunch of Sydney enthusiasts met in Sydney's Cabramatta for brunch and a wander around. I was blown away by the vibe at Cabramatta today. About a 30 minute drive from the airport, it's one of Sydney's many culturally diverse suburbs with a leaning toward the Vietnamese community but certainly not exclusively so. We enjoyed traditional "Phở" noodles (Vietnamese noodle soup) which was just delicious. Afterwards we walked the exceptionally busy and vibrant John St markets with an array of street sellers offering all manner of things. Plenty of alleyway shopping strips too - we stumbled into one place offering steamed dumplings with chives for 80c a piece - just delicious. Do yourselves a favour Sydney and explore Cabramatta - very satisfying for the senses!
VIVO Cafe Tasting Event
A bunch of Twitter friends got together on Friday night at VIVO Cafe in Sydney. Invited by owner Angela Vithoulkas, we arrived around 6pm and four hours later we had enjoyed over 20 courses! Fortunately they were share plates but I was still extremely full and stumbled out of the cafe with some take-home packs of leftovers and a lovely "showbag" with all sorts of goodies including freshly ground Di Bella coffee enjoyed again today. It was fantastic to catch up with Angela again, who was a great supporter of my Black Dog Ride last year (hosting my fundraising event at VIVO cafe)
We live in amazing times: a little activity (ok, maybe a lot in my case :-) on Twitter and some good old fashioned networking and you get invited to events like these with smart, lovely people. I am proud to know Angela and congratulate her and her team on building a great cafe business.
We were also entertained with live jazz and vocals, have a listen here:
Here are highlights of all the amazing dishes we tried. My favourites: grilled haloumi & roast vegetable salad, wagyu beef burger, parmesan scrambled eggs, and the Vietnamese chicken salad. Nom!
Great TED Talk: Salman Khan on "Using video to reinvent education"
How inspiring is this fellow. I'll be showing this site to my kids. I love the idea of flipping the teacher/classroom time to "self-study for lectures" at home and "doing the homework during class time" Thanks to Marc Lehmann for sharing this with me today.
